Q: What is Succession Planning?

A: Succession Planning is the process of identifying and developing suitable employees through coaching, mentoring, off-job training or job rotation, to replace key players within an organization when their terms expire.  From the risk management aspect, succession planning is important because researches foresee there will be critical shortage in companies of middle and top leaders for the next five years and it often takes years to develop effective management staff.
 
 High Impact Presentation Skills Workshop

A lot of times, the excellence of a company’s services/ products/ polices are conveyed to clients/ business partners via presentations, and therefore, executives are finding ways to polish their presentation skills for greater success.  This workshop aims to provide practical skills on delivering high impact presentations to corporate audience, including clients, suppliers, management, the business partners, etc. Through the workshop, participants are equipped with the framework of structuring effective presentations, and also tips in keeping audience interested and handing difficult questions. April 2013 HR Highlights
Economic Highlights

According to data from the Census and Statistics Department, the number of unemployed people who were managers and administrators rose by 1.9%, or 7,700 persons for the period from Nov 2012 to Jan 2013. The median monthly income of managers and administrators, however, rose by 8.3% to $32,500. An HR consultant said in the staff cut exercise of banks and financial institutes, middle and senior-level management are the targets. However, those who are highly competitive may not rush for a new job, thus leading to a higher number of unemployment rate among managers and administrators. [Source: HKET (A36), 1 March 2013]

An HR consultancy released survey results on pay adjustment, which covered 1,200 employers from HK, mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan. It found that 52% of HK respondents would give 3% to 6% pay rise, 48% higher than last year. Nearly 20% would offer 6% or above while 9% would have pay freeze. More than 90% of respondents found talent shortage the major obstacle to business development. According to the HR consultancy, sectors like accounting, construction, banking, sales and marketing, and IT are facing more severe talent shortage.

The National Bureau of Statistics and the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing released the manufacturing and non-manufacturing Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) in Feb. The major figures are as follows:

Manufacturing PMI
- manufacturing PMI dropped to a five-month low of 50.1, compared with 50.4 in Jan 
- sub-index for new orders dropped to 50.1 from 51.6 in Jan
- export orders fell to 47.3, a drop of 1.2 points from a month earlier
- PMI for small-scale businesses dropped to 46 last month from 46.2 in Jan
- the index for large enterprises was unchanged at 51.3

Non-manufacturing PMI
- non-manufacturing PMI declined to 54.5, down 1.7 points from Jan
- sub-index of new orders retreated 1.9 points from a mo! nth earlier to 51.8
- new export orders lost one point to 51.6
- index for service dropped 1.3 points from a month earlier to 53.6

In a report by a recruitment agency, which surveyed 10,000 employers and employees in Asia including 540 business leaders and 340 employees in HK, the following issues were highlighted as key obstacles to competitiveness:

Looking for Leadership
- over half of surveyed employers believed their top productivity challenge was a lack of leadership for the next phase of organizational growth
- 4% surveyed organizations rated their current leadership capabilities as excellent, while 45% gave a “good” grading

Skills shortage
- 30% of surveyed employers said filling critical vacancies is a key productivity challenge
- only 40% of employers said they are confident in attracting the type of people that they want

Employee turnover
- 58% of surveyed employees said they were likely to leave their jobs over the coming year
- 46% of employees said the lack of opportunities for growth and advancement was the reason to leave while 18% cited salary

An ageing population
- 53% of surveyed employers believed HK’s ageing workforce will have a negative impact on their organization over the next 10 years, and they are not confident the government is doing all that can be done to address the issue

The jobless rate stayed flat at 3.4% from Dec 2012 to Feb 2013 while the underemployment rate decreased from 1.6% to 1.5%. Total employment reached a record high of 3.712 million. On the short-term outlook, the Secretary for Labour and Welfare said the buoyant domestic consumption and inbound tourism should continue to fuel labour demand, helping to keep labour market conditions stable. The number of people receiving a monthly income of more than $100,000 decreased by 14.7% year-on-year..  [Source: HKET (A28), 22 Feb 2013]

HK’s consumer price index rose 3% in Jan from a year earlier, a drop from 3.7% in Dec 2012, according to the data released by the Census and Statistics Department. The underlying inflation rate in Jan 2013 was 3.1%. A government spokesman said the inflationary pressures are still likely to be largely contained in the near term, given the moderated increase in import prices and the modest local economic growth. However, the volatility of international food and commodity prices amid the global liquidity glut, coupled with the rise in local housing rentals over the past year, may pose some upside risks to inflation.
